The fear of missing out — or FOMO as Gen Z calls it — is enough to keep a traveller on toes. A perfect itinerary with a tight ‘to-do’ and ‘to-see’ list – isn’t that how it should be? But sometimes, just being in a place is enough. Travelling light, even in the head, can also translate to the joy of missing out, or as they say – JOMO.

In Himachal Pradesh, one of the most popular tourist destinations in India, the fight between “to-do a lot” or just “to be in the moment” can be quite intense. There is a lot of hustle and bustle, and then there are havens of peace. Having a bit of both, or taking a pick with a strong bias is, of course, a traveller’s choice.

For the Kullu district, here is a four-pointer if “doing nothing” yet loving Himachal is on your mind:

1) An afternoon in Naggar: The picturesque hill town is about 20 km from Manali. It has the Naggar Castle, which apart from being a 16th century fort and a heritage hotel, has also been the shooting sight for several movies, including ‘Jab We Met’. Maintained by state tourism department, the restaurant has an elaborate menu.

The views from the castle are appetizers for the eyes while the food is served. Then there is Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery And Museum, which houses the body of work and glimpses of life of the Russian artist, apart from multiple cafes nearby – excuses to stick around for as long as needed.

2) Beauty of Beas: Arguably, there is nothing more beautiful than being in Manali and soaking in the beauty of Beas. On the road, in a cafe, in a hotel or homestay — anywhere and everywhere, the river literally flows along with you.

3) Nature walks: When in Himachal, nature walks and treks happen with or without a plan. While Manali Nature Park is a quiet place to spend hours, unwinding in the mountains is another option.

4) Cafes in all hues: Coffee lovers, dessert hoggers, platters serving a universe or minimal meals – there is place for one and all in the cafes in and around Manali to spend time with a book or with friends.
