“Adventure capital”, “Roof of the world”, “The land of high passes” – Ladakh is known by many names. But multiple descriptions do not do justice to the beauty of Ladakh that calls for acclimitisation literally and metaphorically, for a visitor.

With an estimated footfall of lakhs of tourists annually, including foreign travellers, the ecologically sensitive Union Territory is at the risk of depletion of natural resources due to various factors.

Innovator and social reformer Sonam Wangchuk earlier this year observed a climate fast and kicked off a campaign to flag concerns over the resources of the Union Territory. While his campaign was also to call for autonomy for the region, among other things, he also spoke about how locals know about adjusting with minimal resources (which a traveller might not know).

For those who don’t know, Sonam Wangchuk is known for his innovations and he has set up a school too for residential learning, which is open to welcoming visitors for a glimpse into the world of sustainable living. It’s called SECMOL.

On that note, if you are visiting Ladakh, it’s best to go sustainable. Some of the very easy ways to do it are:

1) Prefer homestays: It’s highly recommended to prefer homestays in places like these. Pangong Lake is one of the most popular destinations here and locals host the tourists in their homestays mostly.

2) Go minimal: You are staying in one of the most beautiful parts of the world for only a few days. Do not leave behind a huge footprint. Try to go minimal.

3) Try avoid using single use plastic: To begin with, carry a water bottle.

Also, chances are high that you will be going for a tour operator for the sake of convenience. Among the many things you ask, also ask them – do they priortise sustainability?
