Back in 1963, with the release of Bandini, the Indian movie industry saw the arrival of a lyricist who was set to weave the magic of little everyday observations in his poetry to appeal to people across ages. With the growth of his fame, his words became simpler and complex and simpler and complex, as and when the time and the story demanded.

The man of many – beautifully woven together – words has been Gulzar. His versatility has been unmatched in many ways. A playlist of the songs composed using his words has every colour of the rainbow. Whether it’s the blues or bright yellows of crazy and happy or an upbeat dance song, Gulzar has penned lyrics for all shades of human emotions.

“Tum Pukar Lo”, and “Wo Shaam Kuch Ajeeb Thi” from “Khamoshi”, “Tujhse naraaz nahi zindagi” from Masoom, “O Manji Re” from Khushboo or “Koi Hota jisko apna” from Mere Apne – these classic compositions are all written by the legendary songwriter.

“Aane Wala Pal Jaanewala hai” from Golmal, a song about the inability to stop time, has been immortalised by Gulzar’s poetry. “Lakdi ki Kaathi” from Masoom has been a favourite of children and children in adults since forever.

Arguably, he has been one of the few songwriters who did not stop swinging his wand despite the blinding lights of modernity. The legendary writer also held on to his simplicity even as he wrote for an audience always seeking more, and very distracted. Even while writing a raunchy song like “Beedi Jalayle”, he captured the rawness of rural parts. The evocative has never been vulgar in Gulzar’s world.

The 88-year-old has never stuck to a single genre or a single style. And that’s why his body of work is extraordinarily rich and tasteful.
