Three decades back, a young actor featured with Salman Khan in a movie, Love, which can be defined today as a typical 90s Bollywood flick. Her character was that of a rebel. But a rebel in love… innocuous. Back to 2023, Revathy’s OTT avatar – in ‘Tooth Pari’ on Netflix – shows she has kept up with times, in terms of choosing her character. Luna Luka is powerful, calculative on the battlefront and nothing even close to what she has been seen doing on the screen before.
Not just her, other performances on the show are equally commendable. Director Pratim Dasgupta said in one of the interviews how he had seen only one ‘Twilight’ movie. Blood-sucking creatures, living underground, may be the central characters in the series. But ‘Tooth Pari’ has a distinctive desi soul. It does not seem to borrow ideas.
Tanya Maniktala has been subtle even while playing the blood-sucking fairy. Her love interest Dr Roy – portrayed by Shantanu Maheshwari – is like just the right amount of sugar in a perfect cup of coffee. You can see the shy dentist in him, who will rise up to the occasion when needed.
Each frame in the show is poetry that brings to life the streets of Kolkata, and even the dark, undergound world of those who thrive on the human blood.
In the middle of the fight between the two worlds, it’s commendable how the story highlights how a woman is shamed for living in a man’s world. Yet she becomes the alpha female in her second lease of life.
‘Tooth Pari’ may be gory in bits but it is engaging till the end when the viewer may be reminded of a trending dating term – zombeing. No more spoilers here. You can choose to watch the show, if you still haven’t.
